01 / Why Mortis

Built for notes you'd rather nobody else read.

Private by construction

The key never leaves your device.

It's derived locally from your passphrase, and every note is encrypted with AES-256 before it syncs. Lose the passphrase and not even we can open your vault — that's the point.

Yours, in plain files

No database to escape from.

Standard markdown, wikilinks and frontmatter. Export the entire vault as a .zip of .md files whenever you like, and open it in any editor you want.

Everywhere, instantly

Write here, read it there.

Edits reach your other devices within a second. It keeps working offline and catches up the moment you're back online.

02 / Team Working

Share a folder. Keep the encryption.

Turn any folder into a shared space. Everyone in it receives the folder's key sealed to their own identity — the server still only ever stores ciphertext.

  2. 02
See who's hereA live dot for everyone online, and a quiet note when someone else has the same page open.
  3. 03
Edits merge, nothing vanishesChanges made at the same time merge; a real conflict is marked for a person to settle, never silently dropped.

03 / Features

Everything a second brain needs. Nothing it doesn't.

01

Links & graph

[[Wikilinks]], backlinks, unlinked mentions and a living graph of how your ideas connect.

02

Instant search

Full-text search across the whole vault — titles and tags included — in milliseconds.

03

Rich markdown

KaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams, callouts, transclusions, properties and live queries.

04

Canvas & boards

An infinite canvas on desktop for thinking visually, and Kanban boards that are just markdown underneath.

05

Flashcards

Spaced repetition (SM-2) straight from your notes — write front :: back and review.

06

Daily notes & agenda

A note for each day, a calendar, and every task with a due date gathered in one agenda.

07

Version history & trash

Step back to an earlier version of any note, and bring back what you deleted.

08

Publish to the web

Put a single note or a whole digital garden online behind a public link.

09

Works offline

Local-first on desktop and an offline copy in the browser — keep writing on the train.

10

Discord bot

Save messages to your vault, push notes and back up a server from Discord with MortisBot.

04 / An external brain

Your notes, readable by your AI.

Wikilinks and backlinks give your vault a structure machines can follow. Share a note or a whole project as a single link and hand it to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini — they read it as connected context, not a flat file.

  • One link for a note or a whole project
  • Links between notes come along with it
  • Readable by any AI that can open a web page

05 / Security model

A server that can't read your notes.

Your passphrase never leaves your device. The encryption key is derived from it locally, every note is encrypted with AES-256, and only the ciphertext is synced. There's no reset link for your vault, because we never held the key.

  • Key derived on your device, never sent
  • AES-256 encryption for every note
  • The server stores ciphertext only
  • Hosted in Switzerland, no telemetry

06 / Free, all of it

Free. All of it.

No plans, no paywall, no trial. Every feature is free for everyone — shared folders and 10 GB of encrypted storage included.

Support it

Optional

An independent project, with no investors and no ads.

If Mortis Cloud is useful to you, a donation helps pay for the servers in Switzerland and the time that goes into it. Donations are entirely optional and unlock nothing — everyone gets exactly the same app.

Thank you — it genuinely keeps the lights on.

Whatever happens, everything you write stays yours: plain markdown files you can export at any time.

07 / How it compares

The same workflow, without the trade-offs.

09 / Questions

Asked, answered.

Is it really free?

Yes — all of it. The apps, real-time sync, end-to-end encryption, shared folders and 10 GB of storage are free for everyone. There is no paid plan and no feature held back.

Can the server read my notes?

No. Note content is encrypted on your device with AES-256 before it syncs, so the server only stores ciphertext that only you can unlock. If you lose your passphrase, nobody can recover it for you. Note titles and folder names are kept as metadata so sync can work.

How is it funded?

By optional donations and by its author. There are no ads, no trackers and no data for sale — and donating unlocks nothing, so everyone gets the same app. Whatever happens, your notes are plain markdown you can export at any time.

Does it work offline?

Yes. The desktop app keeps your vault on your machine, and the web app keeps an offline copy. Keep writing without a connection; changes sync as soon as you're back.

Which devices are supported?

A desktop app for Windows, an Android app, and the web app for everything else — macOS, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Chromebooks. Native macOS and Linux builds are on the way.

Am I locked in?

No. Everything is plain markdown with standard wikilinks and frontmatter, and one command exports the whole vault as a .zip of .md files — from the web app too.

Start writing. Nobody's reading.
